KAP 2009-30: Mooney's Bay, Ottawa, Ontario - Sept 17, 2009 : Mooney's Bay, Ottawa, Ontario
I went at this time of day to observe and try to do aerial photography of sports photographer Murray McComb taking shots of kayaker John Ferguson. The wind was blowing away from the river so had to be content with only distant shots.

There is slight blurring in some images caused by camera movement at low light levels (slow shutter).

These images were taking with Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) using a remote-controlled camera rig suspended below a kite line.

For aerial shots of Mooney's Bay in winter see KAP 2008-17.

KAP 2009-29: Hillsborough Park, Sheffield, South Yorkshire - Sept 9, 2009 : Hillsborough Park, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Hillsborough Park is adjacent to the Hillsborough Football Ground, home to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. It is at this football ground where on April 15, 1989 the aptly named Hillsborough Disaster took place where 96 Liverpool Football Club supporters lost their lives.

The large park near the stadium was where I was flying my kite and camera gear for this session. Although the wind was blowing away from the stadium, and although the winds were very light forcing me to use less productive autokap, there are nevertheless a couple of reasonable shots of the stadium. Thankfully I did have my autokap rig with me - the light winds would have never lifted my remote-controlled rig this day.

The photographs in this gallery were taken from a camera suspended below a kite line, a technique known as kite aerial photography (KAP).

KAP 2009-19: Hartland Covered Bridge, New Brunswick - June 27, 2009 : Hartland Covered Bridge, New Brunswick
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the world. It is 1282 feet long, crossing the St. John River at Hartland, New Brunswick.

This session was marked by extremely poor light and weather conditions and was curtailed shortly after starting due to a pending lightning storm. I was passing through so I had to do what I could and mark it my list of places to try again. Consequently the images in this gallery are of lower quality.

KAP 2009-18: Our House, Ottawa, Ontario - May 23, 2009 : Our House, Ottawa, Ontario
I put off trying to KAP our house for 18 months. You can deduce why in a couple of these images. Large trees in near proximity. Launching the kite was challenging due to dead air at ground level and air turbulence higher up ... but relatively easy compared to bringing it down. With launching, as soon as a good wind is caught you can let out line quickly. Bringing it down is a slower process and unlike launching adds a lot of tension to the line promoting erratic behaviour when gusty. Turbulence caused the kite to drift 45 degrees left-to-right making it difficult to haul in with the trees 45 degrees apart.

The lesson is: it is not necessarily a question of whether you can or cannot launch a kite, it is whether you can or cannot get it back down.

KAP 2009-16: Prince of Wales Railway Bridge, Ottawa - May 4, 2009 : Prince of Wales Railway Bridge, Ottawa
This was my third attempt to KAP the Prince of Wales Bridge from the Quebec side. At least this time I did get some pictures but it was a rather unsuccesful outing in my view. Wind conditions were not strong and continually changing. I started with the FLED kite and full remote control and after much time and frustration ended with the Levi-light and autoKAP before having to abandon altogether. This location needs to be done again.

These photos were taken from a camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography).

KAP 2009-15: Kanata Business Park, Ottawa - May 3, 2009 : Kanata High Tech Business Park, Ottawa
Matt Young and I KAPped together at this site today with Trevor Johnston as an observer. Weather conditions were marked by lots of dark clouds and fairly strong wind with alternating gusts and lulls. Turbulence around the buildings prevented too many risks being taken for close-ups and a motorcycle training course in the adjacent parking lot prevented us from wandering for long shots. All this to say that this subject deserves another go during more favourable conditions.

Trevor's photos of Matt and I KAPping can be seen in the KAP Session Photos by Trevor Johnston gallery.

Chapeau, Quebec is on Allumette Island (L'Isle-aux-Allumettes), a 22 km x 12 km island in the Ottawa River. Pembroke is on the Ontario side, beside the southern channel and Chapeau is on the Quebec side, beside the northern channel and situated on Allumette Island itself. The area also includes Morrison Island, Marcotte Island, and some smaller islands.

The main focus of this session was to take aerial photographs of the imposing church, L’Eglise St-Alphonse-de-Ligouri, the surrounding community and river valley.

A narrative account of this session can be read on the Holiday Junction Travel Blog.

KAP 2009-10: Westboro - April 11, 2009 : Westboro
This session took place in an field/park area next to The Keg Manor Restaurant and the side and behind the CIHI building at 495 Richmond Road (Canadian Institute for Health Information). Westboro is the community in which I live and in a couple of shots my street and house are shown. The snow has only left a few weeks ago. The lawns are still yellow (we don't have grass though) and the trees are leafless. In a few weeks these will look much greener.

Most of the images in this set are of the community of Westboro Village and the buildings near the Ottawa River Parkway.

KAP 2009-9: Champlain Bridge - March 27, 2009 : Champlain Bridge

This session includes shots of the Champlain Bridge, the intesection of Island Park Drive and the Ottawa River Parkway, the Parkway as it heads downtown beside Tunney's Pasture, the Ottawa River and distant shots of the Ottawa city skyline. The snow has just left and the scenery is somewhat drab with leafless trees and yellow grass.

I did a more colourful session at Champlain Bridge the previous fall, from a different location on the opposite side of Island Park Drive, but still on the Ontario side of the river. Go to KAP 2008-51: Champlain Bridge and Island Park Drive - October 2, 2008 to see the Champlain Bridge in the autumn.

Lemieux Island is in the Ottawa River just upstream from downtown Ottawa, Ontario. It is between the Chaudiere Falls and the Champlain Bridge. The island is the site of the Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant, currently under renovation. An old iron railway bridge, the Prince of Wales Bridge, crosses the river at Lemieux Island. It has been the focus of a contentious debate regarding a rapid transit system to bring Gatineau (Hull) commuters to downtown Ottawa.

These images were taken using a camera suspended from a kite line. This technique is known as Kite Aerial Photgraphy or KAP for short.

As with the previous KAP session there was little wind and I was thankful that I had set myself up with autoKAP equipment before this holiday. KAP 2009-5: Samara, Costa Rica - February 15, 2009 : Samara, Costa Rica

Before leaving on holiday I purchased an autoKAP rig to complement my fully remote controlled rig so that I might still be able to do aerial photography on lighter wind days. I was really glad I did. Although there is less control of what you're shooting, the rig weighs much less than my remote controlled unit. The camera angle cannot be modified from the ground. It rotates 30 degrees every 5 seconds and snaps a shot at each interval. So about 12 shots, one minute and the camera has gone a full 360 degrees. My preference if for remote control where you can select a target and take many shots at varying angles and altitudes, thus increasing the chances of getting a good shot. There is a feeling of having more creative control even though you can't truly see what you are shooting. AutoKAP is more relaxing somehow and you can concentrate more on flying the kite, allowing the camera to do the work while you rest a few minutes at each point of view.

The first 6 days in Samara were light wind days, and several of those had virtually zero wind above 200' making KAP impossible for me regardless of equipment. The only way I could get anything this day was with autoKAP and it was a short-lived session. That is one way of saying that there are not many images in this gallery.
